Pastured Poultry
We know you love our chicken because you’ve never been shy about telling us: It’s the best chicken I’ve ever tasted!
Well, we love our chicken, too.
Poultry holds a special significance for us Baumans. It’s what we built Cedar Valley Farms on way back in 2001 when we jumped with both feet into farming with a ludicrous combination of 40-year old parents, six young kids, no farming experience to speak of, and only 160 acres of land–which isn’t much in Kansas.
But you’re really curious about WHY our chicken is so TASTY and NUTRITIOUS, right?
The Bauman family – that’s my parents, John and Yvonne, and my five adult siblings and their spouses and me, AND all the grandchildren – works together to produce quality food, meaningful work, and a better world on our small farm.
Our varied interests have resulted in my family participating in EVERY step of the food production chain…

We pick up the chicks at the hatchery, feed them non-GMO grains we’ve raised and ground ourselves, place them out onto green grass as soon as they are feathered, move them daily to fresh pasture, hand-butcher them on our farm’s USDA-inspected facility, then deliver them direct to YOU, our farm supporters!
That’s the secret. Pure and simple. We have authentic in our name for a reason!
Below we give you SIX reasons why Pastured Poultry makes a difference.
And because we know you care about the health of your family, we also want to share the nutritional benefits that pasture raised chicken and eggs have compared to conventional chicken and eggs.
We want to encourage you to check out this awesome video from APPPA, the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association! I was recently elected to the APPA Board of Directors and I am so honored to be a part of an organization that supports and educates family farmers and connects them to consumers like you who are seeking out pasture raised poultry.

A Healthier Way Forward
“Pasture raised” poultry describes a method of raising poultry where the birds move to fresh pasture often. They live a majority of their lives ON pasture—not in a barn that never moves. Chickens in a stationary barn that only provide access to pasture may never go outside the barn—And that’s not pasture raised!
Pastured Poultry Difference
With constant access to fresh pasture, pastured poultry is better for the chickens, the land, and the people.
- Connects you to the face behind the food.
- Turns manure into an asset that builds fields, soils, and wildlife ecology.
- Imparts a deeper flavor and firmer texture.
- Reduces the need for antibiotics, medications, and coccidiastats.
- Harnesses the good things about nature.
- empowers local and rural economies.
